What the YAK?

This is our "Let's Yak" format, where each section is designed to provide you with valuable insights and support as you manage your practice. "Let's Yak" stands for Learn, Encourage, Training, Services, Yearn to Earn, Action, and Kommunity Events—seven key areas that we believe are essential for running a successful practice. Each week, we'll share expert advice, motivational stories, training opportunities, and practical tips tailored to help you grow both personally and professionally.

L - Learn

Another podcast rec - The Being Well Podcast:

The host Forrest Hansen interviews well renowned Julie Menanno about Attachment Theory - communicating to connect with your partner then how to repair when conflict arises. Julie breaks it down so anyone (even me - an extreme emotional withdrawer) can understand.

You can also subscribe to the Being Well Podcast on Apple.

E - Encourage

You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think

Christopher Robin from “Winnie the Pooh”

T - Training

At the Yakity Yak we have talked about the Gottman Institute and the Gottmans before. If you are new here’s a refresher.

The Gottman Institute, founded by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, is a renowned organization dedicated to researching and improving relationships through scientifically grounded methods.

John Gottman, a clinical psychologist, and Julie Gottman, a clinical psychologist and couples therapist, have combined their expertise to create evidence-based approaches that strengthen marriages and romantic partnerships. Their research spans decades, featuring studies on thousands of couples, which have led to insights on the dynamics of successful relationships and the root causes of conflict and disconnection. The Gottmans have developed tools such as the “Sound Relationship House” theory and the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” model to help couples build trust, manage conflict, and nurture intimacy.

Today, the Gottman Institute offers workshops, books, and online resources to help individuals and therapists foster lasting, healthy relationships.

We have linked the Level 1 Couples training below. It. is hosted in Punta Cana, December 5th - December 8th.

S - Services

Patient Feedback - The Yak wants to help you get feedback from your patients.

How helpful would anonymous feedback from your patients help you? Maybe not feedback about your clothes or hair or style? But how about how they used the skills you taught?

Or how they felt immediately after they left the session? How did they put it all back together when they left the couch?

All anonymous…that would be awesome!

If you think this would be beneficial to your practice please give us a Yak at [email protected] or go to our website to book a call.

Y - Yearn to Earn

K - Kommunity Events

Kommunity events, virtual and in-person coming soon!

Have you been to the forum r/therapists on reddit?

The r/therapists subreddit is a dynamic online community where mental health professionals can connect, share experiences, and support one another. With thousands of active members, it’s a space to discuss everything from challenging cases and career growth to self-care and burnout. Whether you’re seeking advice on clinical techniques, looking for resources, or just need to vent to people who understand, r/therapists provides a judgment-free zone for collaboration and learning.

So….it’s kinda a Kommunity. It will work until the Yak gets their act together and gets a a typical kommunity event.

It is a great place for new therapists to ask all their questions, no matter how ‘stupid’ because it is anonymous.
